God Sent Us Help on the Road

In June of 1992, during a very difficult season of my life when I had just lost a stillborn daughter, the Lord called our family to move from the East Coast to the Midwest.

Not long after, my husband and I drove to Kansas to search for a job for him and to find a place to live. We brought along our two young daughters, ages two and four, while our three older sons stayed behind with a close friend.

My husband was uneasy about the trip because of our old car. He wasn’t sure it could make the journey there and back. But deep in my heart, I knew God had called us to move and that He would take care of us. So I prayed a simple prayer: “Dear Lord, please give my husband peace and the assurance that we will get there and back safely.”

Halfway to Kansas, the car suddenly began making troubling noises. My husband pulled into a rest stop and parked. To my surprise, in the space next to us stood a man leaning against his car, as if he was waiting for someone. He was waiting for us!

Before my husband could even open the hood, this stranger stepped forward and said, “Let’s see what we’ve got.” Without hesitation, he began working on the engine, explaining everything he was doing as he went. He clearly knew his way around cars.

I sat in the passenger seat in awe, watching the scene unfold. Within about thirty minutes, he finished, closed the hood, shook my husband’s hand, and said the very words I had prayed: “Don’t worry. It will get you where you need to go.”

Then, just as suddenly as he appeared, he got into his car and drove away.

We continued the rest of our trip to Kansas and back home again without a single problem. God had answered my prayer—sending exactly the reassurance my husband needed and showing us, once again, that He provides help right on time.
