The Power of a Simple Prayer

One of my sons is a professional freelance illustrator. He has built a fascinating and successful career, but ever since graduating from college in 2009, there was one company he dreamed of working for.

Have you ever had a thought that just seemed to drop into your mind out of nowhere? That’s exactly what happened to me one day when I suddenly recalled my son’s long-held goal. In that moment, I felt impressed to pray for it. My prayer wasn’t long or complicated—just a simple, sincere request asking God to open a door for my son to work with this company. And then, just as quickly, I let it go. I never felt led to pray about it again.

A few weeks later, my son received an unexpected message from an art director at that very company. They had seen his work online and signed him into their pool of approved freelance illustrators. Though no immediate projects came his way, I had a dream that September:

Dream: I made an origami rose and gave it to my son and his new wife.
End of Dream.

Not long after that dream, my son received his first two project offers from the company. Since then, he has been offered assignments regularly. His dream became reality—evidence of God’s favor at work.

Origami is an art medium I often use, so in the dream, my origami rose symbolized my prayers. The appearance of a wife—though my son is a bachelor—represented a new covenant relationship, which in this case was fulfilled through his signed contract with the company.

Would my son have gained this opportunity without prayer? Perhaps eventually, but I doubt it would have unfolded in this precise way. In his industry, contracts with this company are extremely rare and highly coveted. God impressed me to pray at just the right time, and He opened the door.

This experience taught me a powerful lesson: pay attention to those thoughts that suddenly surface in your mind. Often, they are invitations from God to partner with Him. Our prayers, even the simplest ones, can alter the course of life for those we love.

"Lord, how wonderfully you bless the righteous. Your favor wraps around each one and covers them under your canopy of kindness and joy" (Psalm 5:12 TPT).
