Following the Peace of God in Life’s Decisions

In 2017, I was downsizing from a house to an apartment. After much searching, I had narrowed my options to two complexes in different towns. I struggled to make a final choice. Where you live is such a significant decision, and since I dislike moving, I knew I wanted this move to last for years.

I decided to prayerfully walk the grounds of each property, asking God for direction. As I imagined myself living in each place, I paid close attention to the presence—or absence—of peace in my heart. When I visited the second complex, I felt a distinct, lasting peace. That was my answer. I moved there, and now, more than six years later, I can truly say it was the right choice. Not only have I loved living here, but I have close relationships with some people who live nearby. God knew what I didn’t. He always sees the details of our future, and His guidance prepares us for blessings ahead.

Jesus often speaks to us through peace. He said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you” (John 14:27). His peace is not fear-driven. Scripture reminds us, “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity or cowardice or fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7).

God is love (1 John 4:7–21). He desires us to live with joy, peace, comfort, and wholeness. When we sense emotions rooted in fear, dread, anger, or anxiety, they are indicators that we are out of alignment with His Spirit. Peace is His wavelength.

The more you practice noticing the presence—or absence—of God’s peace, the easier it becomes to discern His voice. When you feel His peace, move forward confidently. If peace is missing, don’t rush. Continue praying and meditating on the decision until peace settles in your heart. That peace is His faithful guide.
